In a world of robotic wingers, this duo is bringing fluidity back into fashion. Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are a newfound reckoning in the French capital. A touch of old-school flair in a new world of football has returned to our screens, and it's double the trouble.
A small collection of players are able to replicate a fluid style of football; before formulations and creative control took over. Doku, Yamal and Rodryo play with a level of creative freedom, but this is total freedom we are witnessing in Paris. They are the directors, the composers and the actors rolled into one. The manager is there to conduct passion and play but this duo is running riot. The duo is playing with the freedom and skills of legendary icons, audiences feel as though they’ve been transported back in time. We haven’t seen fluid football being played like this for a while.
From Garrincha, to George Best, to Gareth Bale and Ronaldinho, audiences love players that play beautiful football, and this Parisian pair are pretty impressive.
Since Kvaratskhelia’s arrival, the duo has only started six games together. In those games they have amassed an astounding 12 goal contributions, averaging two a game.
Their combined goals and assists for the season are at 28 goals and 9 assists, with Dembele claiming the majority due to having a full season under his belt. The Georgian giant wasted no time settling in as he managed an assist on his first PSG start. Any guesses to who he assisted?
Their dynamic flair is furthered by their ability to play anywhere across the front three, interchanging and adapting to what the game is offering. Both have played through the middle and both wings, making them increasingly difficult to defend as no-one can predict their movement. Their overlapping runs, clever link-up play and skills that the streets would be proud of, have made them a force to be reckoned with this season, and it’s far from over.
Liverpool may’ve claimed the win last night in Paris, but Anfield won’t shake this duo. Since their last defeat on November 26 against Bayern Munich, PSG have scored 66 goals in 21 games - an unbelievable feat. They can’t be kept quiet twice in a row. Expect a comeback in Merseyside, and you’ll hear the Triomphe all the way to the Arc.
